Having finished (and passed) my Linear Algebra course I am down to a manageable load of 3 courses. and things are looking reasonable. Still a lot of work but I am confident that I'll pull through.

Life at home is good. I'm getting along well with my flat mates and have a bunch of little fix-it projects on the go all the time. These make me very happy :)
last week we had a fire inspection of the building and people on all floors threw out a bunch of stuff to "de-clutter" the escape routes to prevent our eviction, so I scored a bunch of free stuff including: a table, some speakers, a hanging organizer thingy for my clothes, and some cabling.

I was sick this week, since Wednesday I think... but I'm better today. Just in time to enjoy a bit of weekend.

Ah yes the project... I think I'm going to blog on this a bit more as I do it. The general Idea is to use an old PC wirelessly networked with all the computers on our floor (thats 19 if you count mine) hooked up to an old TV so we can wirelessly stream any movie off anyones PC to be watched in the common room. As an added bonus I plan to have the PC auto-boot into a Super nintendo emulator so I can place EVERY super Nintendo game ever made, in the living room.... planning proceeds, I'll post more on this project later.

I got to wander around and shoot a couple of rolls of film yesterday. Found a heron by one of the canals and it made for an interesting subject. We'll see how they turnout. I'll post those pics to http://www.flickr.com/photos/apothecary/ when they are developed and scanned.

In the boredom inducing grip of illness I managed to do some really boring but necessary maintenance on my computers... looks like my little MAC laptop might be salvageable after all (fingers crossed). Also cleared up some space so I can resume listedning to the BBC top 100 billboard songs every week (its good to keep on top of what crappy pop people are diggin' as time passes:))

I've applied for a job at a sketchy pub near my place... I still dont have any real documentation allowing me to work or even be in this country, Thank you dutch beaurocracy, but the pub in question hardly seems the kind of palce to care. They dont actually have a permit to operate.

Well, I'll try to be better at updating this page more often... with photos...
promise.

cheers form holland,

Martinmartinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02808621406475486575noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-642846404442630333.post-47201456391857160482007-10-13T11:40:00.000+02:002007-10-13T11:44:23.854+02:00thanksgiving...Its been a while since my last post. Yesterday was my first day of classes and the course load is insane! The material is challenging and my schedule is soul crushing. regardless, it is all fascinating material and i look forward to my project courses. But party time in Amsterdam is most certainly over. At least until next term once i get into the swing of things. aside from my Monday and Thursday penance the things seem manageable. The next night we camped in what can only be described as the worlds most perfect spot; on a soft sandy beach beside the North Sea, with a small cluster of vegetation providing dry firewood and cover from the wind. It was breathtakingly scenic. The fringe festival was good, but the density of crowd that it generates makes me uneasy. there were some amazing street performers.

After Becca returned to Uncle Sam's territory I made way to Falkirk to meet with a friend of the family. I must extend my thanks to Frank and Grazunia for their incredible hospitality. I spent 2 days with them visiting some great out of the way attractions in Scotland including the Falkirk wheel and a small mining town nearby. It was a great rest from the intensity of traveling hobo-style. Got to play more than a handful of snooker and chess over more than a handful of port and scotch.

Finally the trip ended much as it began, with a 24 hour bus ride from Edinburgh to Den Haag. Pics to come in a later edit as they wont be developed until Friday.martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02808621406475486575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-642846404442630333.post-85512392786952570602007-08-11T13:58:00.000+02:002007-08-11T18:43:53.336+02:00camping flavoured adventure...It was our second night in Scotland, Becca and I decide that we are going to camp that night in order to save money. So instead of the 16 quid hostel we bought 4.30 train tickets to the town of Longnidry which is right beside the North Sea. After what some might consider a few too many pints at a Polish pub called "Pivo", Becca convinces the barman to concoct an "Irish car bomb". (Half pint of Guinness with a whiskey/bailey's dropshot) We make it to the train and are off towards camping flavoured adventure. Of course, during that 25 minute train ride the weather shifted from a mild and refreshing drizzle to a torrential downpour. And I mean SERIOUS RAIN... we were soaked to the bone in a matter of seconds. But we pressed on. The idea was to find the ocean, luckily we did not. (the wind would have been too much) Instead, wandering through the darkness we turned left under a small bridge which granted us a few seconds relief from the rain and wind, and ended up on a gravel road running between two fields. Finally, I spot the optimal area up off the road under a tree in a bank of foliage between the gravel road and a farmers field. In less than 10 minutes flat, in the unyielding rain and complete darkness, I have the tent up. and we are sheltered. everything is drenched and it was a very cold night. the next morning we awoke at around 6 am and upon exiting the tent we found ourselves a few feet from a heard of MASSIVE cattle, who seemed as startled by us as we were by them.
We survived, and it made for quite the tale don't you think?martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02808621406475486575noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-642846404442630333.post-58675552551978932432007-08-05T14:43:00.000+02:002007-08-05T14:46:25.559+02:00scottish breakfast...2 runny eggs, blood pudding, haggis, 2 sausages, bacon, fried beans, hash browns, and bread...
i need a napmartinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02808621406475486575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-642846404442630333.post-33565376688644361622007-08-02T15:50:00.000+02:002007-08-11T14:55:52.796+02:00The adventure continues...I always feel better when traveling. There is something about it that centers me.
The trip so far has been a great success. After a few days in Holland Becca and I hit the road for Brugge, which is an amazing city, seemingly built entirely out of cobblestone and red brick. After an initial wander about Brugge we gave up on the idea of camping here in order to see the Brooklyn Funk Essentials play a free show in the town square. Armed with a 6 pack of Amstel and 2 bottles of Belgian Kriek, we lounged out on a bench to the funky beats. We spent two nights at the HI hostel Europa just out of Brugge centreville, which gets 5 stars in my opinion. It was clean, safe, well situated and very reasonably priced at only 15 Euro per night. The following day served up a sampling of Belgium beers the highlight of which was a Christmas ale. On an interesting note, the Belgians are adamant about their beers and rituals of their serving and consumption. Every beer, of which there are ALOT, are served exclusively in the corresponding glass. So even ordering a Christmas ale at the end of July, I was provided a glass of the appropriate volume, with the brewery's name and the specific name of the beer embossed on it... amazing! <img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8yjRvf4TuKTvmOp-_hp2RS1rL5zLKr6KxLsdf82b71mvJasy2fEK4482xJfFBLdKqg2S-RnxT-QW5JPCsXehT02vvidKPM2DdaWVuEOYYEbaBJ6e2mSSp21ArIPtguUqHN7Grw0cXu1an/s200/ales_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5097425155530932386" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVN8DlIGA9j99h4vEzzKS3-N1RyjYrbxo6dPGqOjyo7o1SuQHUoJ5TPMYAHVqzcPPVnMwBAWbNZzEXZThNIg0DRXLp4VzLaRJVp64wotK8BBhs7g4aCWaOjcTUwrhWQMMXHCp5qdQ-KZbT/s200/ales_1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5097424073199173762" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7NDB7kR70esHFA1x0OHNepoDSfZ6tVRqsG6pkr6UjcEV3KNwuBW5D3LPUJJUVL5rkBlz4FWyO1ceeMdKdtZfNOrjitMIL5poif1HIKEl50JWoLgY-_q2dyL7143AdPssee6uTkG287yW_/s200/ales_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5097424777573810322" /> After a very very lame day in Brussels, the kind where everything goes so wrong that one can't help to look at the day through a filter of bitter humour, we pressed on to Paris, where everything would be better.

Paris proved once again, that it is the best damn place on this planet. All it takes is one night of drinking red wine from the bottle, watching fire jugglers in front of Notre Dame at night, and you'll know what I mean. This city never ceases to amaze me with its beauty.

well, this will hajve to be the end of this post... need to finish packing my bag and get on the 23 hour bus ride to Edinburgh for the opening day fo the fringe Festival!

cheers,
--mmartinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02808621406475486575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-642846404442630333.post-53436714778264828382007-07-29T11:44:00.000+02:002007-07-29T12:38:37.041+02:00And we're off...Today Becca and I leave for Brugge.
